"Nasty Winter Weather"

Several parts of the country are getting clobbered with heavy winter storms. How are you all faring? Seattle and Portland are experiencing really bad storms, with a lot of snow, right now, but so far it hasn't come over the mountains to add to our difficulty in getting around.

Portland and Seattle don't usually get a lot of inclement weather, so it really ties things up when it happens.

Does anyone have any particular ideas or advice for dealing with really bad weather, ice, snow, etc? It was so cold here last year that some people with well-insulated homes had their pipes freeze. Cars left outside didn't want to cooperate and when it got really bad traffic accidents were so numerous that overwhelmed police had to prioritize and go to the really bad ones first.

Any tips or advice that anyone could put up would be much appreciated.

We are lucky here. Hasnt been too bad although we have had severe hailstorms, with strong winds and lightning and people have been killed.

You asking advice about getting through a bad winter? I have been hearing about all the snow and cold in that area and it seems all over the US the weather is not doing what it normally should.

Of course my 1st thought was if you live in one of those areas, stock up on firewood, books, wine and chocolates and just hunker down till it is over!

Of course living in Florida we don't have to deal with those problems. We will get some cooler weather, but it only last a day or two..and so far that is all we have had. I love the cold here, so I'm hoping we aren't done with it here....today it will be 72, but by Sat it will be up to 80 again! Just not ready for it yet.

I live in the Puget Sound area. We are going on day 3 of no school due to all the snow. We've been at home and are starting to go stir crazy. While it's been nice to sleep in and not go to work, it will definitely be nice to get back to a regular schedule. Thankfully this time we still have power.

My sister lives about an hour north of Portland and got 16 inches of snow. I live just over the river from Portland and we only got a couple inches that melted pretty fast, but its been very heavy in the rain department. My backyard has standing water, especially where I didn't get gravel spread yet. At work between the apartment buildings we have alot of flooded sidewalks.

I always recommend a little common sense.

If it's colder than 30 degrees outside crack the faucet the furthest away from where the water enters your dwelling just enough to let it drip steadily.

If it's icy don't step on it, drive on it or lick it.

If it's snowing and you don't gotta go anywhere, stay at home and enjoy it there.

I know that Seattle and Portland are in the grip of an unusually fierce storm, and that those cities lack the big artillery of snow fighting equipment common to cities who have to deal with it all winter, every winter. I found it even more hazardous because many drivers weren't experienced at driving on snow!

So far we have had an incredibly mild winter with very little snow. We are usually buried at our higher elevation, but this year we still have deer coming to the feeders, which is very unusual. Most years, all of them head for lower ground and better weather and we don't see them until they reappear in the spring, with many of the does trailing fawns.

It's hard getting around here most winters, especially with our long, very steep driveway, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The scent of pine trees much of the year, the absolute quiet of the mountains, and the stunning views and sunsets mean home to us.

Sounds lovely Catherine.

We moved where we are no because of the greenery, but they have just announced they are pulling down all the trees and the fields to build more social housing!

I am so angry. We moved from where we were because of this. We used to live in such a beautiful environment and they are wrecking it. There are homes everywhere empty that need tidying up and instead they ruin more countryside and wildlife.

It is very upsetting watching where you walked as a child to spot the local wildlife be ripped to shreds. We are destroying this world. My daughter even notices. She asked what will happen without all the trees.

Makes me angry.

I have thought about it in the past but i am noticing more and more something needs to be done. My daughter has vowed when she grows up she will do something about it and save all the wildlife. And save all the trees too. She has always found trees beautiful.

Anyway that is my rant lol.

We have had a pretty mild winter in Wisconsin so far too - until this week. We are having our 3rd snowstorm in 7 days today, and windchills in the -20s.

Michelle, what does the term "social housing" mean? Are they single family dwellings or apartments, or what?

Catherine, it is homes for people like teenage mums, single mums, alcoholics, drug users, people out of prison and people who have never worked and live on benefits. They get free housing in some cases or lower rents. These people cannot get a mortgage or cannot pay rent by themselves privately so the governement/ council look after them. We have alot of housing like this in my town. There are more to be built now though.

Unfortunately in Wisconsin studded tires are illegal except for emergency vehicles and a few other special groups. You have to get by with good snow tires and lots of safe driving. For the most part it's not too bad.

Michelle and Lee, we have that here, too, but sometimes in the big cities the housing is questionable. Many people are having to resort to this with the economy the way it is. I hope things improve soon. So many people are out of work.

Speaking of books...I just spent the last 90 minutes at my lending library with my 2 helpers trying to fit in about 75, just like new paperbacks that a wonderful lady gave me. This lady and her sister love to read (both are older and not in the best of health) and she buys them ALL new, they each read it then she packs them up for me and calls me about every 3 months to come get them.

Well she called yesterday and one of my 'helpers' went to pick them up, took them home to sort out and to put our lables on them for easy filing on the shelves. The 3 of us decided to meet up there and start at 'A' and go through to 'Z', pulling out some of the older ones to fit these in.

My newest helper, Gail (wonderful gal who lost her hubby about 8 months ago) looks up at all of the Catherine books (about 15) and says, surely we can pull some of those out? Betty (my other long time helper) and I turn to her and say 'SHUT YOUR MOUTH, A STANDARD RULE IS YOU NEVER PULL OUT A C.A. BOOK UNLESS IT IS A DUPLICATE!' (and even those I keep at home to give to friends). Then I told her there would be another one joining the row next week. She just rolled her eyes.

Catherine, soon you will have a shelf all to yourself.

Too funny, Lynda! And flattering, too! I'm so glad that many of my books are recycled so that more people can enjoy them. I think books should be available to anyone who wants to read. I've heard of a few -- a very few -- authors who object to their books being re-sold but I never understood why. They already had had the royalty from the sale, and they could very well make a new fan. At the very least, someone will get a good read.

I agree Catherine about reselling books. Every book in this lending library has been donated by someone (some by me as when I buy a book I'll normally put it in for others). I have found that when someone takes a book from this library and really likes it they want to read more of that author, they'll go and buy them...then donate them to me.

Ture I have many readers who never buy books (mostly because they are living on a fixed income) and depend on my library for books.

Many times when I am in there, someone will come in to return a book and ask if I have more of that author, if I don't I'll look to see what they are returning, and suggest other authors like that. Some people seem to pick a few authors that they like and are afraid to try new ones...I'll pull out a few and say 'take these and try them, if you don't like it, just bring it back next time you are here (and our library is in our club house and everyone has to come there to get their mail)and try some others. There are times someone will stop me while I'm out walking and say 'I just love the book to told me to read!' Makes me feel good.

Of course anyone reading romance will first get a CA book in their hand and 2nd is SEP.

So know that when someone gets hooked on an author and can't find more, then they go out and buy them, then they get recyled to me!

I like SEP too, Lynda (Susan Elizabeth Phillips, right?). And I am a firm believer in recycling books. I know many people, in particular older adults, are living on fixed incomes, and have limited recreational opportunities for just that reason, or for reasons of health. I think it's wonderful that a variety of reading material can be made available to them. I wish this happened more often, and all over the country.

I agree with Lynda, if you try out a new author and you like what you read, your more likely to buy new. I only bought a couple of Catherine's books used, all the rest I buy new as soon as they are available. Same with many of my other favorites. Sometimes a used store is the only way to find some of the old favorites.

We have snow! Freezing cold here. I spent saturday sorting out the animals maling sure they have plenty of bedding and making sure they are covered well. My cat is spending her time following me for snuggles. Hopefully the snow will not last long. It is the ice after the snow i worry about to be honest that is even worse.

Be careful, Michelle...you don't want to slip on the ice. Over here it's possible to buy slip-ons that put little spikes on the soles of your shoes to give better ice traction. Do they have them in Wales?

We had a wee bit of snow over here as well. But...
It's been too cold to snow most of the time. -7,5°C at noon one day. I freeze my fingers off at the stiring wheel, even through my mittens. I'm really considering some lamb fur to cover the dratted thing. Maybe some of you can laugh about that, but i'm simply not used to such temperatures. My fiancee and his ponies delighted. He can spread liquid manure on his fields and the ponies are turned out on their pasture. Neither is possible when the ground is muddy. But as soon as the is snow, Annemie just galopps one time round, returns to the gate and complains she can't find her green stuff. Alina just likes it outside. They are both Haflinger ponies and real beauties with golden fur and long cream mane and tail. Not for riding though. Annemie knows a bit how to, but mostly they are cart horses.
Another one suffering from the cold is Heidi the Third (maybe it's even the fourth. All female dogs of my fiancee are called Heidi. As far as I know there was a big one, one that climbed trees and the one he got now.)
Heidis job is protecting the farm against intruders and finish any rat or mouse she finds. She takes it very serious, patrolling the borders of her territory on a regular basis. But she has really tiny legs, plowing through any snow drift taller than a few cm. Imagine a scottish terrier, shave it and dye the fur in a black and brown brindle pattern. Thats Heidi. While there still isn't much snow but this cold, she decided to spend most of her time "indoors" and just poke out her nose if there is a car coming. Indoors means the room at the side of the house where the horses and their harnesses are kept. It connects to the kitchen and stays above zero due to the horses. Heidi has a small hole in the door so she can get outside.

A close friend of mine had a daughter who went to northern England on a student exchange program several years ago, and she said she was amazed at how mild the weather there was compared to here. During her time there she was able to visit Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and she commented often on the wild, scenic beauty of Wales.

Wales is a popular holiday destination for walkers and climbers. It can get cold up in those mountains. At the moment they are full of snow. We need to boost our tourism more, but wales is the poorest part of the UK.

Mild weather is sold out in Germany right now.
They reported -30°C from some part of Germany I'm very relieved not to live in. That's temperatures I'd normally think is exclusive for Siberia. *shudder*
But thats what all the meteorologists told us for years. The gulf stream is diminished by the global warming. And the gulf stream is responsible for the mild winters over here. We better start buying warm underpants, because it's not going to get better. And all the old ones are laughing about the global warming... It can not be, it's getting colder every winter, isn't it?

Still mild here in central Florida. Had some days in the low 80's but today a front is moving in and tonight it could get to the upper 30's and Sunday in the high 50's...my kind of weather!

The best part is we got rain yesterday and over night! We have been about 45 days without a drop, so it was needed.

By Thurs/Fri of this coming week, it will be back up to the low 80's! And people wonder why everyone is sick???

We've been getting a lot of very dense fog...highly unusual for this area, and it's causing a lot of accidents.

We had fog for weeks every evening before it got this cold.
Weather forecast said we would get snow today, but there wasn't more than a few flakes until now. Next week they say it might even rain, as we might get temperatures above zero. As the ground is completely frozen it's going to be desastrous.

Last week we had 19 inches of snow, then 2 days later 3 inches. I am looking forward to Spring. Of course Spring here means snow as well.

We've had an incredibly mild winter so far. I'm just waiting for Mother Nature's onslaught when we least expect it.

We had 2 days of it getting down in the mid-30's at night, 40's and 50's for day time highs...now today it will be 77 and then go to the mid-80's for a few days! I love the cooler weather but not this warm stuff inbetween! Of course all the 'snow birds' and 'spring breakers' are loving the warmer weather.

I met some people from Canada the other day while walking..me in my winter coat and gloves and she is in short-shorts and tank top! Guess 42 was warm for her?

We're above Zero °C once again. I'm glad the rain took it's time to start pouring right where I live, so it wasn't as slippery as expected.
The upper five centimeters have thawed, underneath the ground is still frozen. Looked a bit funny when I was exercising the horse on that. She had such a slow trot out of insecurity that I went indoors with her.

Now Carnival has started. I went to a riding lesson today dressed up as a cow. I own a piebald pullover that has a pocket like an udder and a hat with horns and ears went over my safety cap. The others were a football player, two pirates, pink flower lady with wings and some dancers. The pink flower lady realised a bit late that pink synthetik fur might seat you a bit unstable in the saddle.
Do you have carnival or is halloween sufficient for you to shoo away the ghosts of the dark part of the year???
Ours will go on until the start of lent next wednesday. We'll have parades on monday with everyone in costumes and sweets thrown by the passengers on the parade cars. I really hope the rain has ceased by then.

Carnival? I haven't hear of this. There's Mardi Gras in Louisiana, but I've never heard of a festival to banish the dark of winter. It sounds fascinating. Can you share a little more about it? I'd love to hear!

http://www.koelnerkarneval1.de/fastelovend-op-englisch.html

I really hope it works to put links in here...
It's the site from a carnival society, they have explanations in english how the "fifth season" is celebrated in my part of Germany. They celebrate a bit different farther south.
The essence is to have parades through the streets, dress up in silly costumes (my fiancee went as Emily Howard from the BBC comedy Little Britain, I went as a gentlemen to the parade. To the session he wore a french frie costume and I was a cat), catch lots of sweets thrown by the parade people and party afterwards. Some go to sessions where speeches are hold, they are in verses, about politicians and stars what they did wrong, but comical. it's kind of difficult to describe. They are able to talk about people like you'd never be able to face to face.
Typical is some kind of formation dancers, music, ...
And it's great fun!
The session we went to was a small one from the local shooting club. Their speeches weren't so much about politicians but our neighbours and whatever funny happened around the village.
For example, it was about holiday camp where some guy confused his toothpaste with his suntan lotion in the dark and only found out after he already put the brush into his mouth.
The cousin of my fiancee was mentioned as well, he went to see a football match without a description how to get there and missed the first goal because he was 40 minutes late. He missed the second while getting himself a beer, the third because after drinking he needed to go somewhere...

Well... maybe you better just look up Karnevalsumzug or Karnevalssitzung on Youtube to get a picture of the parades and stuff. I don't know if any of the bigger ones are on there, but watch out for Koeln or Duesseldorf

The roots of Karneval are somewhere in the mist of time when the old germans decided that all the spirits that crept closer during winter had to be shooed away. Right now it's more like a last minute party before lent
And I still don't know what I'm doing this year. Usually it's no alcohol and no fast food for me during lent, as it's too hard for me to stop eating meat.

I haven't had time to read through all the replies, but since I'm from the Chicago area I'll throw in tips on what I do to keep prepared for the winter commuting.(Even though we have had an unseasonable warm winter this year I still stay prepared.) Hope these ideas help!

1. For your car: go to a car store or walmart and buy a couple bottles of "Heet" (no joke). Put it in before you fill up your gas tank. It helps to keep your fuel-lines clean and prevent them from freezing in super cold weather. I usually do this if I know a cold snap is coming.

2. I have a small car and keep a large jug of cheap kitty litter in the trunk. If I get stuck in snow/mud I pour the litter around my front tires (front wheel drive) to create traction. The litter clumps from the moisture. Also the extra weight in my trunk helps in snowy weather. Containers of sand would probably work as well.

3. I keep a back-pack with extra polar fleece jackets, socks, flashlight, partially filled water bottles (if they freeze the water needs room to expand), granola bars, matches and a small candle. I also always have at least two blankets.

4. I keep a shovel in my car trunk as well. (they make them with extendable handles - walmart)

5. I've bought a black and decker rechargable battery jumper. Way better than jumper cables, and you can also plug a cell phone charger into it in case of emergency. Great to have year-round.

6. Keep a small first aid kit in your winter back-pack car stash (they are cheap and often come with glow sticks and those foil-looking mylar blankets that keep body warmth in - I actually kept one of these from a marathon i ran so that i have an extra. Plus they fold up really small.)

7. My number one tip as far as driving goes. If you go into a skid on snow try not to panic and slam on your breaks. Steer into the slide, use your breaks gently to prevent further loss of control. Best thing to do is lay off your gas/accelerator, steer carefully, and ride it out if you have room on the road to do so.

Fantastic suggestions, and a few I haven't heard of before. I'll be putting them to good use. Thank you!
