Well first off, if you are posting a smilie in a sentence like this 
there needs to be spaces between it and the words. It can't be like this:P or it won't show up, i'll just look like the code for it.The other is if you want to post a smilie at the begining of a sentence, you need to leave a space before starting that sentence, like this.
space/then code/space then sentence

As for your avatar, you only need put in the URL, which is the part I took from your HTML that you were using to post an image.
Just noticed your last question, it'll never come up as an actual image, only the URL for that image. Then if you click on it, people can see what it is. That's how we show each other photo's and whatnot. At X-mas, I posted a lot of URL's for Chrissy avatars so the girls could change theirs just for the holidays. Julie actually still has her's (the Grinch). Lee, I believe is also still using one I found for her with butterflies. I also did one's for Christy & Kristie w/their dogs Bear & Jake w/Santa hats
