"Destroying horses."

This morning i heard some very disturbing news. Usually when racehorses are past their prime i believe alot get put out to pasture or sold on. I had a friend who used to give horses homes after they had been retired from racing but were never raced or ridden again. On the news this morning they said that thousands of horses are put to sleep and used for meat each year as a result of horse racing! And also people cannot afford to look after pet horses anymore. I know here it is every expensive to stable a horse as most farmers have sold off their land now so the available stables charge such high fees.

I was disgusted. These horses run for their owners and then are tossed aside and used for meat! If only i had land i would take in as many as possible I was in tears this morning. It was awful.

It's quite true, Michelle, and it happens here too. Many people love their race horses, but others regard them simply as a commodity. Mares are luckier because they can be bred. Kinder, and more aware, owners donate horses to 4-H clubs and kids who otherwise might not be able to afford a horse are given the chance to own one. These are the luckier horses. The horses get good homes, the kids get a chance to own a horse, and the owners get a tax deduction. Do you have any programs similar to that in Wales?

Not that i know of Catherine. Myabenext year now i am plannign to set my daughter up on a horse ridig scheme. I have set it back as we are plannign to sell our house soon and i have been tryign for a baby for 2 years so our concentration is on that now. But iw ill be looking about for good horse scheme. When is saw this on the news it broke my heart. I am the type who has watched the horse racing and gets upset when i see a distressed animal or the horses fall at the hurdles. I am too much of a softie. I also watched a programme about the homeless dogs that are put down each year. By the time the programme had finished the presenter was crying and i was sobbing my heart out i couldnt even talk. When we take on a pet we have a responsibility to make sure it is safe for life. If we can no longer home it we should find it a safe suitable home. My grandad always said if he won the lottery he would buy me a huge plot of land and i could save all the animals i want.I just wish i could save them all.

Michelle, this happens in the show horse world, too, though not as often. So many people will show an animal, and when it gets older and starts, to use the common term, to "go down," it is sold for a fraction of the original price to someone who either shows it into the ground or ends up abusing and neglecting it.

My dad never -- ever -- sold our retired show horses, and while he used to complain, loudly and often, that he was running a retirement home for old geldings, he loved them all.

I understand that pony clubs are big in the British Isles, and you might be able to find a horse or pony through them, that perhaps is in need of a home. You might even be able to do what is called a care lease, meaning you board and feed the horse, and assume responsibility for all attendant expenses, but there is no purchase fee. Leases usually run for a set period of time, and it is a good way to start with a gentle family horse, and then be able to work up to a more spunky model, if you like.

I wonder if you could find another person or family who is in the same situation, and you could divide the care costs, and the riding times.

Good. I'll bet you could find a family who wants a horse as much as you do, and would be glad to share expenses and riding times. Check with your local pony club assocation.
