3. "RE: Destroying horses."

Michelle, this happens in the show horse world, too, though not as often. So many people will show an animal, and when it gets older and starts, to use the common term, to "go down," it is sold for a fraction of the original price to someone who either shows it into the ground or ends up abusing and neglecting it. My dad never -- ever -- sold our retired show horses, and while he used to complain, loudly and often, that he was running a retirement home for old geldings, he loved them all. I understand that pony clubs are big in the British Isles, and you might be able to find a horse or pony through them, that perhaps is in need of a home. You might even be able to do what is called a care lease, meaning you board and feed the horse, and assume responsibility for all attendant expenses, but there is no purchase fee. Leases usually run for a set period of time, and it is a good way to start with a gentle family horse, and then be able to work up to a more spunky model, if you like. |
