"USA and Wales conection"

Two weekends ago here in my local seaside town we had a huge welcoming party and fun 4 days welcoming American troops. It was a reinactment of the war time when american troops landed on welsh soil and came to port in our docks here in Barry!

It was a lovely day and to this day we still have some ex-american troops living here who fell in love and got married.

Everyone dressed up there was flags up and food and wartime entertainment. It was brilliant!

Someone very important came from the american army to help us welsh remember the americans who bravely fought with us and lost their lives. Both my grandads fought bravely in the war. One grandad was a commando this was the first time these were brought together. The best of the best and i am very proud of him he saw some terrible things. And my other grandad was in the navy and had some disturbing stories. It is nice to remember and honour these brave men.And also men and women who are still loosing their lives now. Someone my brother in law knew was killed recently by people they were training in afghanistan. I hope god brings them all home safely and the fighting ends.Prayers to all those troops out there.x

It sounds wonderful, Michelle. I remember once reading that during the war General George Patton addressed a women's group. He cracked them up by telling them that once the American GI's began writing home and saying how wonderful the British women truly were, the American women would get mad and press for a quick conclusion to the war!

I think many Americans aren't able to distinguish between a British and a Welsh accent. Of course, I'm quite certain that residents of the British Isles think we are the ones with the accents!

Alot of the welsh have very recognisable accents but most just sound english i suppose. As you go into mid wales which we call the valleys the accents get stronger. Do you have different accents in america too?My grandad was famous for his scottish accent he said when he was younger the ladies loved it.

We do. There's the famous Southern accent. Texans pride themselves on sounding like, well, Texans. New Englanders have their own way of pronouncing words, and westerners sometimes get told they have a flat way of speaking. (I don't agree, being a westerner.)

I have family in New Zealand, and I love hearing the speech patterns when we visit there. So different, and incredibly attractive.
