"Early Dawn Discussion......possible spoilers"
| |
I just finished reading Early Dawn and I have to say I really enjoyed this book. I would go as far as saying it is now up there with my all time favourite CA books. I can't explain what it is about ED that appeals to me so much but there certainly is something special there that has touched me. I think being able to follow the relationship between Matthew and Eden develop the way it did certainly appeals to me. The fact that for most of the time it is just the two of them is also appealing to me. How many authors can successfully write a novel with only two main characters for the bulk of the book. The dialogue between the two characters held my interest and watching the development of their friendship and then love was very special. I think that wonderful explanation of Eden's about how Matthew can love more than one person will stay with me for a long time. "Mama just laughed and hugged me tight. Then she told me about all the different corners of her heart and how each corner had one or her children's names on it. In Ace's corner, she loved him most all. In my corner, she loved me most of all. As she named off each of us it startd to make perfect sense to me..." I melted when I read what Matthew said to Eden when he finally revealed his true feelings to her. I won't repeat them here incase someone reading this hasn't read the book yet (I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone but I think they are some of the most romantic words I've read!)if you've read the book you know what words I am referring to. Anyway, I'd love to hear what you all thought about the book. Dianne, Australia |

I would like to start out by saying that I think Catherine has written some of the most stunning books filled with laughter and love. Many of her books are so powerful, wonderfully written and charged with emotion that they stay with you for a long time after you get done with them...I feel that way about Keegan's Lady, Sweet Nothings, Seventh Heaven and Forever After....Unfortunately Early Dawn isn't one of those books for me... I thought it started out GREAT and went along slow but okay through the middle but I think where I lost it was when Ace and the Paxton brothers showed up...The Ace Keegan and Joseph Paxton I know would have rode in there with guns blazing and fist flying...Kicked A@@ and taken names...It just seemed like they didn't even care that their sister had been kidnapped, brutalized and missing for 5 weeks...They were more worried about her being alone with Matthew-who by the way saved her life-getting the cart before the horse than anything else...I also wanted the BIG confrontation..I wanted the Sebastions to "get" what they deserved....Without a confrontation between Matthew and the Sebastions made the ending a little anti-climatic for me. I was kinda like "what..that's it..they were caught..??" On the positive side, I do agree about the "corners of the heart"...I think that really does describe how we feel about our husbands, children, pets and anyone or thing we love... Jules, I can see where you are coming from as far as the lack of a BIG confrontation between Matthew and the Sebastian Gang. For me however that showdown happened just before Eden's brothers arrived. Matthew's decision to end his pursuit of the Sebastian Gang and return to Eden for me meant he nolonger seeked revenge. He made the decision to let go of the past and start a new life in doing so leaving someone else to end the Sebastian Gang's reign of terror. I wasn't disappointed that Matthew wasn't the person who did that. I think it was fitting that it ended the way it did - it suited the development of Matthew's character and his decision to finally let go of the past. I actually liked the brothers entry into the book. I imagine had Eden not run out as quickly as she did when the brothers arrived they probably would have come in guns blazing - they probably didn't do that in fear Eden got caught in the crossfire. Joseph's reaction was probably typical for a brother who just witnessed his sister being overly friendly with a man he'd never met before. He is a hothead after all - act first then stop and think about the situation. It has been a long time since I read Summer Breeze and I can't remember Joseph's story at all. Perhaps I would feel differently if I could remember his story but I enjoyed his part in this book, especially his humour on their wedding night! Dianne, Australia |

Dianne-two points I will agree with you on... 1. Matt letting go of his revenge was okay with me...It did show how the only thing he had to live for WAS revenge until he met Eden. So for him to finally say "It's enough and I deserve to be happy" was a good thing...also showed how much he loved her...and her letting him go when she didn't want him to was also a good part of the story... 2.The wedding night when the brothers showed up one by one for Irish Coffee...That was typical Keegan/Paxton behavoir and reminded me of some earlier books...just the "feel" of the scene was really good... I just feel let down with the ending of the book and here's why...I am supposed to believe that after 5 weeks of this gang chasing Matt and Eden, them killing 2 of the brothers and everything else they did to them...the gang would give up on THEIR revenge...That's what I'm not buying....I think it's fine for Matthew to say "I'm done and I'm starting my life with Eden"...BUT I think it would have been okay for him, Ace and the Paxtons to defend their families when the Sebastions came for them or something like that...I guess I was waiting for him to be going to get Eden and realizing that the Sebastions were in front of him headed the same way...Does that make sense??... I just think it's missing the WOW factor...a point in the book when you kinda stop reading, sigh and say "WOW"... What is the Wow factor for you in this book??...and is there anything you didn't like about it??... I would also like to know if we are going to see Helen and Timothy in a later book?..they seemed like they were going to be important and maybe they were just because by saving him the gang noticed Eden...what do you think about that??.. Btw thanks for the discussion... Jules I.C.B.B.W.I..... |

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-10 AT 11:22 PM (EST) Jules,When I admit to you what the WOW factor for me was you are going to think I am a pathetic wuss! The WOW factor for me was when Matthew was about to leave Eden in the cave and draw the Sebastian Gang away from her. When he stopped and spoke about the four corners of his heart and how a fiery redhead had chipped away at it I had a big sigh! Then he started to walk away, stopped turned back to her and hesitated before he finally kissed her for the first time. That is when I gave a big sigh that put a smile on my face...pathetic aren't I!!!!! Okay, I'll try and be really honest here - you asked if there was anything I didn't like about the book. I've pondered this for a while and I would have to say I was a little disappointed that the second wedding didn't involve Matthew's family. I think after what he originally went through and the love and care his family had given him after the attack and after 3 years on the Sebastian's trail he would have had the decency to involve them in this very special occasion. I can understand the first marriage because of the need to quickly make an honest woman of Eden but to me there wasn't any rush for the second marriage. I had hoped to read about his reunion with his family and his introduction of Eden to them. I am a sentimental fool I guess! Secondly, I guess I'd have to admit there was a moment there when I groaned about them doing another circle of the wilderness trying to confuse the Sebastian Gang. I did think get a move on! In admitting the above I have to clarify this by saying that the above didn't alter how much I loved this book. There were so many aspects of the story that I loved that I can easily turn a blind eye to the few things I didn't like as much. I didn't really give Helen and Timothy a second thought after the Sebastian Gang kidnapped Eden. It actually took me a while to remember who they were! So I guess I'd have to say I didn't really think they'd have a big role in the book. I would really like to read David & Esa's story - David more so than Esa. Jules I have enjoyed discussing this with you also - I look forward to you commenting on this post if you feel like it. Dianne, Australia |

Dianne-First of all you aren't a pathetic wuss!!..I love to hear how books or parts of books make people feel. There have been alot of times I'm reading and crying or laughing or steaming over a book and my hubby looks at me like I have two heads...*snort...After all, the emotion is why we read..right?... I am going to agree with you again on your two points... I would have liked to see more of Matthew's family in the ending of the book...After all they are a part of the Coulter legacy...A reuion would have been nice because there was a part in the book where he talks about how he had not seen his family in a long time... The other part is- I also thought the "circling"-is that how you spell that??-of the wilderness got a little tedious which is why I really thought the ending would have a big BANG to it..hmmm Not to be I guess... Okay-I think we have dissected this book to the nth degree and will have to agree to disagree...You loved it..Me not so much...but the "argument" was fun...LOL.. I would have loved to get some other members thoughts but maybe another time... OKAYYYYYYYY pick another book-hopefully there is another book out there that we've both read...We should check with Lee because I know she and I have read alot of the same books...And we can try to change the others viewpoint ORRRRRRRRR maybe this time we will agree on all points... Also we talked about the WOW factor of this book...Maybe we should put up a post about other books and their WOW factor...That could be fun...what do you think??...ORRRRRRRR we could just discuss it in email...Let me know

Jules, I too think we have gone as far as we can with this discussion - I've enjoyed it, thanks! It is a little disappointing that it was just the two of us but maybe other people haven't obtained their copy yet and I know Lee would have joined in if her copy had arrived in time. Anyway, I'd love to find another book to discuss with you. I'll email you and Lee and see what we can come up with. Dianne, Australia |
