"*SPOILER* Bound and Determined"

LAST EDITED ON Sep-27-06 AT 08:53 PM (EST)

This book really "sizzles" the sex scenes are very hot.

The converstaion between Rafe and Kerry was crude at times and i was bored with not enough storyline. Mind you i only got up to Chapter 5 so maybe it did pick up more further along.

Its not really my sort of book i am not knocking it just not for me..i think its an age thing...this flea bitten rabbit is past it maybe???? OMG dont tell knees i said that hehehehe.

I cant wait to hear what you young ones thought???

The reviews in Amazon were all great so its definately me that has the problem.

Thanks Joan for your selection sorry that i didnt like it.

Young ones, Kathy!?

I'll give it a shot and see if I can put my thoughts down here.

I thought it was interesting in the beginning. But then his words towards her were very crude almost to the point of being cruel and I just thought that for a virgin she slipped into that sexy girl role too easy...

I thought the sex was imaginative and creative.. hehe.. And I do think they had alot of it. Very spicy. As a result the storyline took a backseat to the sex in the book. Now I am not a prude. I like it spicy sometimes, but I like my books to have a storyline too.

I think we all totally judged this book by its cover. I thought it would have much more romance and suspense than it did. I even thought it would have the hero being a bit alpha and they would work together and fall in love on the run while looking for the person framing her brother...

So basically, even though the book started of great his treatment of her was not good in my book. I didn't mind the sex being spicy but I didn't like the way he treated her. I would not want the man I marry to say things like that to me. He just didn't have class when it came to the good aspects of making love. He didn't make me want to be the heroine. He in fact, made me feel sorry for Kerry.. hehehe..

I am not going to say sorry to you Joan (I do that when someone likes a book and I don't.. hehe..) because we have almost the same taste in books and I believe you understand and appreciate when someone gives their opinion about a book...

I know you've never read her before too and I loved that you picked a NEW author for us to try. So thank you for that. I might buy a book of hers again if I find her in store. I don't like to write authors off with just one book. I am glad I read it. Thanks, Joan..

Rika

I too was disappointed and I guess it just reminded me of why I don't usually read or take notice of reviews before I read a book.

I stumbled across the following early this year and decided to give a new author a try based on this recommendation:

"If you pick up one only romance this year, consider this one. Bradley's book will have you laughing and fanning yourself. Kerry and Rafael are dynamic characters, and their story will definitely hold your attention. Bradley has outdone herself with this highly entertaining read. Falling in love should be so much fun"

The story held my attention - it just took too long to get to it!

I checked out a couple of other review sites as well which also gave it a great wrap but, although there were a couple of parts that I found funny, on the whole I couldn't agree with the reviewers.

I didn't particularly like the language, but it's language that seems to be quite common these days, so I just put that down to me being old and out of touch.

It certainly lived up to the comment on the front cover about being 'steamy' - unfortunately there was too much steam and not enough story.

Hmmmmmm my thoughts on the book....

First of all, I did like the book. I've never read anything by her and I thought it was pretty good-not great mind you but pretty good.

Kerry did "adapt" rather quickly to sex but I've read other books where the virginal heroine has done the same thing. I think it can be explained by this thought of Kerry's "Lord, why has she waited so long to experience something this wonderful"....

Yes, I agree, Rafe didn't "wax poetic" but I liked him...When he rushed to Kerry's rescue-not once but twice-when he hired Alex Moza....There is just something about him...He was in love with her...

I thought the twist at the end was pretty good even though I had my suspicions about her...I liked-well not really liked- the Simkins character because I think we have all had, at one time, a boss that was less than ideal....What a icky man.

I liked when Rafe came back at the end for her...but not thrilled with the Vegas wedding...I think an epilogue with something like "as Kerry walked down the aisle towards Rafe...all he could think was....." Would have been better.

The language and sex was somewhat crude and spicy-in that order-but it didn't turn me off from the book...I think I would have liked a little more background on the characters but all in all it was a decent book...Well not "decent" buuuuuuuttt..lol...

I am always looking for "new" authors and although I don't think SB is going to be one of my favorites, I do think I will get the next book-Strip Search-and give her another shot.

It was late last night when I posted my thoughts on this book and I forgot to mention a couple of things.

Yes, Rika, we do seem to have very similar taste in books and your comments were spot-on. My disappointment in the book was caused by the same things you mentioned.

At times Rafe seemed like two different people. Like Julie, I loved the way he rushed to Kerry's rescue and there were signs from quite early on that he wanted Kerry for more than a weekend but then he'd do a complete turnaround and act like a bit of a jerk. The way he ordered Kerry around could have been fun if it had been portrayed as a game they were both participating in but it just didn't come across like that to me.

I agree a little with Julie in that the books was not totally bad..

But Joan.. you said it well. He seemed like two different people and at the end I thought it was chessy. He "couldn't" love her then is miserable and comes back for her but swears before he says he loves her... Nope, I just couldn't like that about him. He was still a jerk at the end when he should have "changed".

But if it makes any sense... I still don't think it was totally terrible. Good pick Joan. I love that we can disect(sp?) a book like this. It makes for fun discussion.. Hehehe..

I agree with you guys on some of the points about Rafe...but I think alot of romance books with "brooding" vulnerable leading men do the whole push them away, pull them back, push them away....and FINALLY decide in the end that they DO want the girl....Sometimes it drives me nuts...Even if I like the main characters.

Do you guys like a wishy washy heroine or hero better?? I can't decide but maybe I don't mind when the heroine is undecided because I want the hero to change her mind by "wooing" her...lol...

I think the book was a good pick because it has alot of points for discussion although I did like it for other reasons...

I think the maybe the book could have been saved for you guys if the ending would have been a WOW *sigh ending...I would have liked that better too....

I don't have one particular type of hero or heroine that I prefer - I have a few different types that I like.

A heroine who seems capable and in control of everything but who underneath is really quite insecure - I thought Janna from Body Check fitted this type. I guess I also like the opposite of that - a heroine who the world sees as some kind of shy nonentity but who is really very strong and capable underneath and who comes into her own when the chips are down.
Just to name a couple.

As for the hero - hmmmmm! - not sure how to describe him.
The strictly alpha guys are fun (not sure I'd want to live with one though!) - especially when they eventually fall flat on their face for the girl and are putty in her hands. Which probably means that they're not really strictly alpha guys after all
I also like a hero who is strong but doesn't see the need to always be proving himself and isn't put off by a strong woman. Someone who can take charge when necessary but who is secure enough to let the woman do her thing.

Probably my favourite - both her and heroine - are those with a sense of humour,

Joan

This book was the tale of two halves for me. All of the sex at the beginning was too much for me. In fact, I’ll even confess that I skipped over a few pages during the shower scene. Once they left the Love Shack, I thought the story improved a lot--although I did figure out who the “bad gal” was pretty early on.

In the process of reading this book, I made several changes to my “ongoing” Amazon shopping cart. I started out with Strip Search--the sequel to Bound and Determined--in my cart. Halfway through B&D, I deleted it. Then, by the end, I put Strip Search back in my cart--simply because I want to know what happens to poor Mark--LOL.

Joan i have to agree with you totally about heros and heroins. Especially love the sense of humour in my books wish there was more of it.

The one thing i do hate in my books is when they have these secrets from each other and you know by the end of the book they are going to find out and be mad at each other....grrrrr it just doesnt make sense to me.

Speaking of humor....

This doesn't happen to me much, but last night when I was reading my Carol Finch book, Call of the White Wolf, there was a scene that, Thank Goodness, lasted for almost two full pages that was the funniest thing I've ever read....

It gave me a fit of giggles and I'm so thankful I was by myself. Anyone else would have thought I'd lost my mind!!!! But it was just soooooo funny. It took me 10 minutes to get thru those pages, I was laughing so hard I was crying!!!

Do any of you ever laugh like that over your books???

Agreed, Kathy and Joan! Humor is so my favorite thing in books too.

Add a well written story, great storyline, intense characters and you get our favorites like SEP, etc..

Like when Molly thought Kevin looked bored in THOM and decided to pretend like she was drowning only to lose her swimsuit bottoms.. OMG, HEHEHEHEHE... Didn't you just laugh for days with that one.. Hehehe...

Speaking of which.. ARGH... can't wait to read Match Me If you can! Am beside myself with excitement that Richard finally came through...

Whew!!! Sex, sex, and MORE sex!!!

I think this book had more sex than storyline, but I still enjoyed it for the most part. I wouldn't be able to read a book like this all the time, but every now and then is okay. I actually learned a trick or two--probably won't be using any of them though!

For a innocent little virgin, Kerry sure did enjoy herself with Rafe. I think he was a little rough on her as she was "new" to the whole sex thing. I guess he wanted to break her in to suit him. She caught on quite fast.

My first thought after the first few pages, was "didn't I just read a story about a woman kidnapping a man?" which we did, but that was simply a coincidence.

I can't say this book was wonderful, but I enjoyed it just enough that I will be looking for the next book at my UBS. Mark's story sounds very "interesting".

Well, Kathy, I never really thought about using the clip-on earrings quite the way Rafe insisted Kerry wear them.... I'm just not very creative, I guess.

Hi all! I am back, and saw you started the discussion posts. All of which I seem to agree with. So I won't bore you with my repeat thoughts.

All I will say, is it was too much for me! Too graphic. Too crude. Too vulgar. Too porn like!

I thought the writing talent was good, but not enough creativity to be an actual story.

Although, I would consider finding out what happened to Mark, too.
