"October Book Club - Comanche Moon"

I thought it would be good to start with Comanche Moon since so many people voted for it.

Like many of us here, I need to reread this wonderful book to be able to properly participate in the discussion.

Happy Reading!

Comanche Moon...
As all of Catherine's books, this one was also wonderful...
A historical that made you feel so many emotions.
I can see Hunter in my mind with Loretta's panties....That was probably one of my fav parts in the book.

Did you like the book? If you have read any of the author's other books, how does this compare?

I loved Comanche Moon in fact it is one of my favourite CA book. Like Beverley I had a chuckle over Hunter's interest in Loretta's underwear. The book drew me into the story and I felt a variety of emotions while reading it - I laughed on occasions, cried and felt anger towards Red Buffalo at times. I believe it is the sign of a very talented author when the reader feels all these emotions whilst reading a book.

I think the Comanche series is very different to other books written by Catherine Anderson. I realise all the characters are fictious as is the story, but I'd imagine Catherine has based some of the actions of both Indians/Whites on similar events in history. I have enjoyed every book CA has written some more than others but I think what makes this one special for me is I particularly liked the Indian/White American storyline and the emotional rollercoaster the reader experiences while reading the book.

Very much. Comparing to the other books this is, somehow, more sedated. In the rythym... but somehow that same different rythym make us more feeling and less reading.

I started reading it but then wasn't in the mood for it and put it aside and moved another book - from NR.

I'll now take this and read.

If I remember right...Catherine did many years of research for the Comanche series...Thats another reason why I love her books so much...She does her best to get every little thing right.
with her historicals, I know she does her best to be as close to what really happened as possible...like Dianne, we know Comanche moon is Fictional...but in my mind, when reading it, its so real to life you know? The struggles they had to indure and the love they shared...
Such a good book.......

I read this last year and haven't given it a second read so I am somewhat fuzzy. This is Christy's fav book and she so highly recommended it I think she sent me a copy as soon as it was released (I love that girl!!!!). Anyway, if I recall I thought it was a very powerful book. I say powerful as it really opened up some powerful emotions in me. My overwhelming emotions as to what was done to such a proud people made it very difficult for me to read this. It upsets me to no end....and of course w/CA's writing it brought alot out in me. Heather Grahmn's Makenzie series did the same thing to me.

Then there was the rape/torture of her sister. It is probably why I haven't read the book again. I found this really difficult.....and very hard to read. I guess this a testament to how powerful the writing was....I will go back and read it one day....but I have to be ready to do it.

Ita been several months since I read Comanche Moon, but I remember reading it twice. Hunter is such a beautiful character. He seems so real, though in reality I have a hard time picturing such an emotionally mature man being produced by such a violent, uneducated culture. If he was raised to torture and kill enemies, why was he so self-sacrificing and kind.

I especially love the indian themes brought forward of actual biological birth being unimportant in parent child bonds. Though all eight of my children are biological, I know I could love another child just as completely.

I also love the family responsibility theme of taking care of widows of brothers and sisters, well everyone in the tribe. We have such an indifferent culture sometimes where people can be truly alone.

Catherine seems eminently fair in the clash between the two cultures, though making her uncle a sexual deviant put one of lowest of white man forward. I love the compromise she was able to end their love story on, because many people out west were much kinder to indians. My own great, great grandmother who settled a town in southern Utah traded with and fed indians regularly. When her blond daughter who was only a few years old was kidnapped by and indian brave, however, she sent her husband after him. It took a few days to track the indian who probably wanted the fair daughter as his own. The indian was beaten severely by that grandfather (who really was more of a bookish gentleman) and the child was returned home. Skeletons in my closet......

I would love to meet Hunter and ask him about life...

I'm in the middle of the book.

The death of a close friend slowed my readings but so far I can join discussion by saying that I tried the book first and then put it aside as it was stirring too much emotions in me.

That prologue where Catherine make us envision the richness of that People and then Hunter's grief (when he cuts his face I cried on the train) and the dialogue with his mother made me put it aside the first time.

Then I gathered it again, and mainly because I felt honor bound to participate in this dicussion .

I'm enjoying it very much. One thing Catherine's books never did to me was make me wish to be that heroine or live some experience described in it... but this book is cutting through the "Oh, so sweet. Such a pleasant reading" and making me wish for things - to live that era and embrace Comanche's People and Life.

A great homage you made them, Catherine.

Now, I'm glad I forced myself to keep reading it. I'm in the part when Hunter is taking Loretta back to her wooden walls. In the train, on my wayt to work this morning, I decided to stop reading when Hunter receives his first kiss

Finished the book!

I liked it but somehow I couldn't distance myself from the pain and grief of the people endured in those difficult times.

And it's all Catherine's fault if I say so myself. This was a trully involving story and while I wanted to keep my mind only on the romantic and lovey-dovey scenes I couldn't.

I believe this is a book to return to after I heal some pangs.

I also finished Comanche Heart and somehow didn't feel I was in the middle of everything and could enjoy more the romance per si.

If I had to choose between the two, Comanche Heart would won, hands down! In Comanche Moon I felt like I was in an emotional rollercoaster, which isn't bad, but not what I wanted or what I felt with Comanche Heart!

All in all two great works from Catherine! :clapclapclap: And being Era Books I believe she must've done an extensive and heartwrenching work to provide us with a very perfect definition of what it was like.

Work Accomplished, dear Catherine!

I wholeheartedly agree with you... that part where Hunter cut his face was sad to me... I thought to myself why did he have to do that to himself but I had to remind myself of some things about Native American culture myself... it is still shocking anyway. I believe one saint did it to herself too... cut herself on the face too -I don't remember her name though. I'm very sorry. I heard that from an former friend of mine on the net and thought to myself that sounded like the Native Americans to me...

Leigh, I think you may mean St Rita, although I was never certain if the "scourging" of her face was something she did or if it just appeared on her face....I'll have to look it up now lol.

Teresa, I understand exactly what you mean.
